Bollywood's biggest film disappointment 2012

Highlights of the best and worst Bollywood films in 2012 have been at the forefront of discussion over the last few days as 2013 dawns upon us all! In between the best and worst we have had the average film hits that were still somewhat enjoyed by audiences, and then we have those films that just didn't quite live up to our expectations! The particular film that had the inability to live up to my expectations this year, and turned out to be a major disappointment was Yash Chopra's last- Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

We can all refer to its box office success to find out exactly how well the audiences reacted to the film, for me on the other hand it remained an incredibly bland watch. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is like any other love film in which the star-crossed lovers are separated from one another for a number of years only to live happily ever after at the end! It's true to say that we can never get enough of Shah Rukh Khan's romantic avatars, but the tedious and repetitive storyline just doesn't seem to keep me entertained. Considering Yash Chopra has been renowned for directing some of Bollywood's widely known classics including Kabhi Kabhi, Dil to Paagal Hai and Veer Zaara, great expectations were held for his last. But somehow he failed to execute a story that will be long remembered!

I know Yash Chopra was known as the 'King of Romance', so it's not like I was expecting anything different in the genre department. My qualms, however, are predominantly to do with how unrealistic the love story was as a whole. You will never stumble across a man who disposes bombs unprotected to survive, but cannot cross a road properly and thus meet with car accidents. You will also never find that the Metropolitan Police allow a civilian to dispose a bomb on a London tube on the basis that he 'may just know something about this'. As much as the story line was totally far-fetched and unrealistic, the female lead Katrina Kaif's acting was just as over-the-top as the film. She failed miserably to enact the role of Meera, as her lack of expressions and onscreen emotions left me wishing for Anushka Sharma to be playing her role instead. Her inability to cry, laugh or even love naturally made the whole Yash Chopra film a rather painful watch, and I do think these reasons suffice why Jab Tak Hai Jaan was by far the biggest disappointment of 2012.
