'A beautiful romance that tugs right at your heart strings'
It's said that no matter how hard you try it's impossible to forget your first love and from Dhanush's perspective in his characters role as the pandit's son Kundan nothing else triumphs beyond obtaining your one and only love. I must say that I never quite held a great deal of expectations from the film prior to watching it but I must confess that I did leave the cinema far from disappointed! Aanand Rai's Raanjhanaa is definitely one of the better movies I have watched this year and it's a film you should definitely watch too! Why? Find out below...
The film is primarily shaped around the character of Kundan who is the ultimate Raanjhanaa (Romeo) of the film. Raanjhanaa then, or better known as Kundan will do what it takes to make that one and only girl he has fallen in love with since childhood and separated from for eight long years during their youth eventually his. Sound like any other love story? Well it's not! Rai in fact moves away from the typical Hindi love saga's and sheds light on notions of unrequited love. The young and beautiful lady he has set eyes on Zoya, played by Sonam Kapoor loves the undisputed attention she is getting from Kundan earlier on in the film, however, as far as loving him back goes Zoya never quite pursues this further.
Why she never pursues this further is because of her love for another man she meets in Delhi- Akram played by Abhay Deol, whilst he is a Muslim too and educated to the same standard, Zoya is adamant to marry him upon her arrival in Banaras. Since Kundan's heart breaks upon hearing this news he vows to marry another woman too on the same day. From this point onwards, the story revolves around whether this Raanjhanaa's love does eventually triumph, or whether it's just too late...
Dhanush, in particular gives a flawless performance and is undoubtedly perfectly casted for Aanand's film. Indeed, he does not look like a conventional hero that we find in Hindi cinema today, however, we as the audience can see his unruly looks have been used for a fine purpose- which fit into the script marvellously well. From Kundan knowing he is not as half as good looking as Zoya he accepts being slapt by her several times even if it means she gives him that much attention. But the very fact that Raanjhanaa portrays the essence of inner beauty and love surmounting outer beauty, all religions, cast and creed is what makes Dhanush's character so heart-warming and ever so appealing. Sonam too does a fabulous job throughout and has definitely pulled off one of her best performances till date. She is so involved in her character and charms us with her minimalistic looks and natural acting skills that nothing seems over done!
To put the icing on the cake the music from the film does wonders too! Composed by the very artistic A.R.Rahman songs such as the title track Raanjhanaa, Banarasiya and Tum Tak add that spark of colour to the whole romance, intertwining the scenes together magnificently well. Everything from the story, acting and music tugs right at your heart strings so don't miss watching it in a movie theatre near you!
