With many Bollywood films, directors have preferred to stick to the mainstream ingredients of values, traditions and customs in their films to taste box office success. Today, however, the picture is something else, where increasingly more controversial and social issues are at the forefront of Hindi cinema! Representations of 'gay' as the new love-rage in film came to prominence in 2008 with Karan Johar's rom-com Dostana, and today one the most recent releases Student of the year by Karan Johar too, incorporated notions of being 'Gay' as something so acceptable!
The changes in Bollywood films brings into question how well audiences are reacting to this? Indeed it may not be a major concern for the generation of today, but Eastern ideologies of the 'family' and conventional storyline's of 'faithfulness' and 'honesty' shared between the onscreen husband and wife have shaped the values, and beliefs many older generations have held for all these years! Are transformations in Bollywood healthy for the industry? Or do they merely represent Western ideologies, which have little merit across India?
Would a South Asian come out about their sexuality? Honestly speaking, I think they should! Embrace the gay within you, and embrace Hindi cinema of today! Well done Karan Johar for depicting such story lines!!
