How to get the vintage look
I am always drawn to different styles and makeup looks from particular films, and Kareena's look in this song Muskaanein Jhoote Hai suits her magnificently well. Here's my tried and tested tips below to achieving the Kareena Kapoor vintage look...
Face
- First of all, make sure you start off with a cleansing, toning and moisturising regime, ensuring your face is clear of any impurities or germs.
- Then you're ready to apply the primer base to your face and neck, such as Bare Minerals brightening foundation primer, which adds a subtle luminosity to the skin.
- Next, the all important concealer is used to cover up any blemishes or under eye bags- which should be applied using your ring finger in order for a natural coverage.
- Once applied, ensure to apply a liberal amount of foundation over the face and neck. I would recommend MAC Studio Fix SPF 15, in the same shade as your skin tone, enabling the foundation to blend in naturally. Use a good size brush which gives an all over professional finish, the one I swear by using is the BareMinerals full face flawless brush, which works wonders.
Eyes
- Now for those all important eyes, where it is important to create as much drama and exaggeration as possible!
- Using an eyeshadow primer such as Urban Decays potion primer, apply a pea size amount on each eye lid, creating a soft and smooth finish.
- Then using the perfect Bobbi Brown eyeshadow brush, apply a golden ombré shade on the inner side of the eyelid. Gold is a perfect colour to reinforcing the classical look, but ensure not to go over half way of the eye lid!
- On the outer area of the eye, create more of a 'smoky' look using a mixture of deep browns and burgundy. I wouldn't suggest going overtly black- as this can sometimes create more of a fierce look. Enough drama will be created using these shades too, and its looks so more feminine!
- Once applied to both eyelids, it's important to blend the shades together using MAC cosmetics blending brush, how much blending depends on how much of the natural effect you are going for. Be careful not to blend too much that the eyeshadow almost looked smudged and your eyes look bruised!
- Kareena in this picture above is seen wearing some artificial eyelashes, which suit her eyes perfectly well and work to intensify her overall vintage look. The best type of eyelashes I have known of for a while now are by a brand called Eyelure. For a classical look, go for a medium size pair of lashes where as much drama can be created through looking natural too. The bigger the eyelashes the more artificial the overall look is.
- Using a deep black kohl eyeliner is key to intensifying the eyes. I swear by using MAC penultimate eyeliner, which is a pen style liner that helps create the perfect line! Sweep further out from the eyes, to create that perfect flick, and if needed go over the first application to enrich the black colour over the eyelash!
- Don't apply any eyeliner on the inner line of your eye, and simply apply some voluminous mascara over the lashes and bottom lashes.
Brows
- Never over do the eyebrows with colour as they can look artificial.
- The thinner your eyebrows, use a thin barrel eyebrow brush and colour shade (suited to your eyebrow colour) to apply on the outskirts of the brows or wear the brow hair is thinner.
- I recommend using Ultra Brow brush on colour by Maybelline, which creates a flawless finish to the eyebrows without over doing it!
Lips
- The lips are full of redness and what is a vintage look without the perfect shade of red?
- Firstly, using a good lip balm apply to lips to keep them moisturised and supple.
- Then using Rimmel London exaggerate lip-liner, apply a thinly around the border of your lips to create more fullness and definition. It is also recommended to apply a little all over the lips, in order for the colour to stain better!
- Kareena's lips here, are a mixture of red and burgundy shades together to create kissable love-locked lips. I therefore suggest using the colours Charmed I'm sure and Love Goddess (MAC) together, which will create this perfect tone of red. So luscious!
- Be sure to apply the Lipcote lip seal over the lipstick, for the colour to stay on for a longer period of time, which will also work as a gloss.
Hair
- The more bangs and layers you have in your hair the more volume and fullness will inevitably be created, which is highly beneficial for creating this look.
- Once you have washed your hair apply a good volumising product to the roots and stimulate it into the hair shaft and scalp, in order for the product to be well-absorbed.
- Then blow dry your hair upside down, which will help create the much needed volume. Once completely dry, tip the head back again and create a side parting.
- Create a T section from the parting, and section off hair from above the crown, leaving the rest of your tresses out. The top section should then be placed into Velcro rollers, left in for twenty minutes.
- Using a good curling tongs- such as Babyliss curling wand create some soft curls in the rest of the hair. Ensure not to leave the tongs in your hair for a long period of time as this will make the curls tighter than necessary.
- Once the curls are complete and twenty minutes have passed, your ready to remove the rollers. Whilst taking them out, you will begin to see volume created with soft supple curls.
- Using a paddle brush, brush the curls out softly, so they blend softly within the rest of the hair. The top section should then be styled with hairspray, with the rest of the hair bought to one side- elegant yet so chic!
